Introduction

Instructors often include a section about Top Hat on their syllabus to provide their students with an understanding of what Top Hat is and the information necessary to get set up. The following information is for students who are enrolling into a Top Hat course which is not connected to an LMS such as Canvas or Blackboard.

Educators teaching multiple Top Hat courses will need to modify the URL and Join Code in the template for each of their courses. The email invitation referenced in the template is automatically generated for a Top Hat course when a student roster is uploaded and can be sent immediately following the upload or at a later time.

Locate and add the Course Join Code and Link to the Syllabus

Your Top Hat course Join Code can be located in two places:

  • Course Lobby: (Image to be inserted)

We will be using Top Hat (https://tophat.com) for class participation. Top Hat is an educational platform that integrates interactive features into learning materials, enhancing class engagement and comprehension.

Creating your Top Hat Account / Logging In

Important! You cannot create a Top Hat account using the mobile application. Please first sign-up (using your school-issued email address) and enroll into your course using a web browser.

Required Course Materials

Once enrolled, you may use the Top Hat mobile app to access your course.

Common Issues & Solutions

My Response wasn't recorded:

  • The "Submit" button wasn't pressed
  • The Question Timer ran out / educator closed the submission window

My grades are not showing:

  • The content is still assigned in Homework mode
  • The educator is required to manually grade the submission

My attendance prompt didn't appear:

  • Attendance was already taken
  • You left class early
